draperRACING Race Report from Snetterton

Wow, what a weekend we had a Snetterton!

Firstly we’d just like to thank all of the draperRACING family for coming down and supporting us. That goes for all of our amazing sponsors, the die-hard fans who turn up, wind, rain or shine and also the incredible competition winners, who we really enjoyed getting to know across the weekend.

We go into every race looking to make progress on the previous round and this week we went one better. Aaron kicked things off by putting in an impressive lap to qualify in 3rd place and on the front row. In the meantime, Tommy also started strongly by qualifying in 9th on the 3rd row and our draperRACING Sidecar Team, consisting of Simon and Jack, put a solid time in to attain 11th spot on the grid, ready for race 1.

During Race 1 Tommy was involved in a hectic race from start to end. On the very first lap, his bike and Ross Twyman had a coming together and this damaged the left-hand footrest and the gear lever. Despite the damage he managed to maintained 5th place for a while, however, on lap 7 the footrest came completely off and Tommy valiantly brought the bike home in 7th place.

Due to this result, it gave him a 2nd row start for the feature race and after a great start, he managed to carve his way up to 4th position. He looked strong, but by lap 10 he had unfortunately begun to experience some front tyre issues that made it difficult to handle. Thankfully Tommy’s experience allowed him to manage his tyre condition and he managed to cross the line in 5th place. This was impressive in itself, but we didn’t realise how impressive until he got the bike back to the pits and we realised just how bad the front tyre was. It was a miracle that he even finished at all, let alone smash his personal best along the way.

After the race, Tommy shared that, “It was a fantastic weekend! The bike and team are currently working like a dream and I’m looking forward to mixing it up the front again at the next meet”.

Next up was Simon and Jack in the sidecar and they had a jaw-dropping start to the race as they moved up from 11th spot to 5th on the very first corner! They maintained this position for the first part of the race, but fuel issues meant that they dropped back and they regrettably had to retire on lap 10 of 12.

Due to the DNF in Race 1, Simon and Jack started from the back of the grid in Race 2, but weaved their way through the pack and made it up to 6th spot before the race was red flagged. This was actually through smoke coming from their own outfit, which was from a wheel rubbing on the bodywork.

It was a shame to see the race come to an end in such dramatic fashion, especially as their pace was very impressive, but they showed what they were capable of and will live to fight again another week.

And finally, last but not least, it was Aaron’s race! Even though he had had a solid start off the line, he ended up in the wrong gear for turn 2 and dropped down to 6th spot. He quickly found his rhythm and bravely fought his way through the front of the field and up into 2nd position.

He began to challenge for the top spot and after the safety car went in, he made a pass for the lead. He amazingly held 1st place for a while but unfortunately, Vickers reclaimed the lead on the straight and the race was then red flagged on the penultimate lap. This meant that Aaron didn’t get another chance to retake him and race for the flag, but as far as problems go, finishing in 2nd place and stepping up on the podium for the first time isn’t one of them!

As you can imagine, Aaron was immensely pleased with his result and said, “the bike worked mega and I’m really happy that we were as competitive as we were. Looking forward to Knockhill now!”

A massive congrats to Aaron, Tommy and Simon & Jack for their determination over the weekend. The team have really made some incredible progress this season and their efforts are really starting to shine through.

All in all a very successful weekend for the draperTEAM and a great reward for all the hard work from everyone. Thank you once again and see you all at Knockhill!
